Victron Galvanian Insulator VDI-16
The galvanic insulator consists of two diodes that are switched on anti -parallel. If you are connected in this way, the diodes allow electricity in both directions, but only above a certain threshold voltage. The voltage in which the diodes are conductive is about 1.4 VDC.
The insulator is installed directly behind the 230V connection of your boat. The passage voltage from the galvanic insulator is higher than the potential difference between metals. As a result, this voltage will not allow current flow and as such the galvanic insulation prevents any electrolytic current. However, if there is a (higher) fault voltage in the AC circuit, the diodes can let electricity through, and the residual current circuit breaker interrupts the circuit.

Security and prevention of galvanic corrosion
A complete galvanic separation between the ship and the land network is achieved with a separation transformer. It increases security, makes galvanic isolators superfluous and prevents polarity problems.
Security is assumed for granted in electricity networks on land. In the event of a short circuit or an ground error, a melting fuse burns through or an residual current circuit breaker (FI control switch) separates the circuit. The connection of the land line of the land connection with the metal parts of the ship, as described below, lead to galvanic corrosion. If the earth is left out and only the phase and the zero conductor are led on board, all the fuses mentioned on board are ineffective, and there is no longer any short circuit protection.
Galvanic corrosion It always arises when two different metals, which are connected to each other electrically, are immersed in a conductive liquid (an electrolyte) such as sea water or polluted fresh water. In principle, the galvanically more active metal (the indereher) will corrode, while the more noble is cathodic. The corrosion rate depends on the type of participating metals, the size of the surfaces involved or the water temperature.
It's a mistake to assume that galvanic corrosion can only occur in aluminum or steel ships. In reality, it affects all ships as soon as metal parts such as the propeller and the shaft or metal outer skin implementations come into contact with water, and the ship is ground over the land connection. It may be tempting to do without the protective conductor in the land connection: However, this is extremely dangerous for the people on board, since the protective devices then no longer appeal (see above).
The best solution To prevent galvanic corrosion while maintaining all safety aspects, the installation of a separator is achieved. This ensures the complete galvanic separation from the land network. The country current is on the primary winding and the on -board network on the secondary winding. The translation ratio is of course 1: 1. All security systems of the electrical system work separately and regardless of the country current.
Soft start function Or a unlocking current limiter is a matter of course for the Victron Separation Transformer Problems with High Inviation Flows.
It is recommended The grounding of the secondary winding can also be connected to land (e.g. in the winter camp) in order to ensure maximum security.

Victron Galvanian Insulation VDI-64
The galvanic insulation prevents electrolytic corrosion. It blocks low-voltage-comparison streams that get into their boat via the earth's ground cable. These currents can cause corrosion on the underwater metals of the boat, such as fuselage, propeller, shaft, etc. The galvanic insulator consists of two diodes on the inside that are switched on anti -parallel. If you are connected in this way, the diodes have electricity in both directions, but only above a certain threshold tension. The tension, which leads to the diodes, is around 1.4 VDC. The insulator is installed directly behind the 230V connection of your boat. The passage voltage of the galvanic insulator is higher than the potential difference between the metals. Therefore, this voltage does not allow conductivity, and the galvanic insulator thus prevents any electrolytic current. However, if there is a (higher) fault voltage in the AC circuit, the diodes let a current through and the residual current circuit breaker interrupts the circuit.
