Do It Yourself - How to Install a Solar Panel System to your Caravan

Installing solar panels on a motorhome can be a great way to have an independent power supply and save energy while on the road or camping. Here is a brief guide on how to install solar panels on a motorhome:

Step 1: Determine the location of the solar panels Choose a location on the roof of the motorhome that provides ample space for the number of solar modules you are installing. Also, consider that the location should allow the best possible alignment towards the sun and no shading from other objects, such as roof racks.

Step 2: Prepare the roof Mount the ABS spoilers to the PV modules using the included screws. Thoroughly clean the roof, ensuring it is free from dirt and debris. Mark the location of the solar panels and follow the adhesive manufacturer's instructions to install the holding spoilers and the modules on the roof.

Step 3: Install the roof feedthrough Find a suitable place to run the cable of the solar system inside so you can hide it as much as possible inside a cabinet. Drill a hole for the feedthrough. Then clean the roof at the adhesive point and install the roof feedthrough using the PV module adhesive.

Step 4: Wire the solar panels Run cables from the roof of the motorhome to the battery charge controller to connect the solar panels to the battery. Pay attention to the polarity and connect the cables accordingly. Make sure that the cable is sufficiently sized to allow the maximum current flow from the solar panel to the battery.

Step 5: Install the battery charge controller Install the battery charge controller in a suitable location within the motorhome. Connect the cables from the solar panels and the battery to the charge controller accordingly. A charge controller protects the battery from overcharging and deep discharging, ensuring the battery is optimally charged. Secure the line to the battery according to the controller and the cross-section of the line.

 Step 6: Connect the inverter

If you need alternating current in the motorhome, you need an inverter to convert the battery's direct voltage into alternating voltage. Connect the inverter to the battery to draw power from the battery and feed it into the motorhome's grid.

These are the basic steps to install solar panels on a motorhome. It's important to note that the exact steps and requirements can vary depending on the specific characteristics of the motorhome and the solar system. Before performing the installation, you should carefully read the manufacturer's instruction manual and ask us for advice if necessary. Please note our kits - these are optimally coordinated and everything necessary for the installation is included

 Good luck.
