Storage batteries

Home-storage batteries are energy-storage systems installed in houses and other buildings to store surplus energy from renewable sources such as solar panels for later use. They let homeowners cut their reliance on the grid and maximise self-consumption of renewable power. Several battery technologies are used for home storage, including flooded lead-acid, AGM and lithium-iron-phosphate (LiFePO₄). Flooded lead-acid batteries (e.g. lead-calcium) are inexpensive and long-lasting, but they need regular maintenance and are relatively large and heavy. AGM batteries are maintenance-free but cost more and have a shorter life (about 200–400 cycles). LiFePO₄ batteries have become popular in recent years. They offer high energy density, long life (around 3 000–5 000 cycles), deep-discharge capability and low self-discharge. LiFePO₄ packs are lighter, more compact and recharge faster than flooded or AGM batteries. Although their upfront price is higher, they provide better performance and reliability over their lifetime.
