The MPP 170 CI solar charge controller from Votronic is ideal for use with solar modules with a maximum output of 170 watts peak (Wp), a maximum solar module current of 10 amps and a maximum module voltage of 60 volts. It has two charging outputs: The main charging output enables the charging of lead-acid, gel, AGM and modern lithium LiFePO4 batteries, while the second charging output is used for trickle charging and charge retention of the lead-acid vehicle starter battery.
How the MPP 170 CI solar controller works
Votronic offers high-quality MPP solar controllers especially for use in motorhomes. The solar charge controllers of the "MPP" (Maximum Power Point) series with the "IU1oU2" charging characteristic act as a connection between the solar modules and the batteries. The controller's MPP technology continuously and automatically determines the maximum power output (MPP) of the solar modules several times per second;
It then transforms the voltage surplus of the solar module to a higher charging current for the battery (realized by high-frequency switching controller technology with high efficiency). This increase in charging current leads to shorter charging times and optimized power utilization of the entire solar system. The MPP solar controllers operate fully automatically, are maintenance-free and offer a wide range of functions and benefits.
The most important features
MPP charging current increase of 10% to 30% (efficiency > 95%) compared to conventional regulators thanks to the use of state-of-the-art regulator technology (microprocessor). The increase in performance is particularly noticeable in the cooler months of the year and, for example, on days with high fog, low and diffuse lighting (wintering).
For charging lead-gel, lead-AGM, lead-acid or LiFePO4 complete batteries (with integrated BMS, balancing, safety circuit and approval!) of the specified nominal voltages and the co-supply of consumers connected to these batteries in permanently installed systems with the specified battery capacities and charging programs.
The charging voltage is free of peaks and regulated in such a way that overcharging of the batteries is excluded.
Two battery charging outputs: Automatic charging of the main supply on-board battery (BORD I) and trickle charging and charge retention (max. 1 A) of the vehicle starter battery (Start II) with protection against overcharging.
&p>Charging without monitoring: Standard protection against overload, overheating, polarity reversal and battery back discharge (if solar power is too low, e.g. in dusk, at night, etc.).
Parallel/buffer operation: Compliance with charging regulations even when consumers are operating at the same time.
"IU1oU2" charging characteristic: Defined charging voltage increase (U1) prevents harmful acid stratification (lead) and ensures equalization charging of the individual battery cells (lead and lithium), followed by automatic trickle charging (U2),
Overcharge protection: Regulates the charging current of the battery if there is too much solar power and the battery is full, ensures that the battery is charged as much as possible by immediately recharging it when power is consumed.
On-board mains filter: Problem-free parallel operation with wind and motor generators, mains chargers, alternators, etc.
CI bus connection: for displaying all relevant data on a central vehicle display
Measurement output for EBL, possibly existing electrical block in the living area of the vehicle: Enables the convenient use of a (solar) power display built into the electrical block to check the solar system. Please check in advance whether the existing Schaudt electric block (EBL) and the corresponding control and display panel are compatible.
Switching output "AES" (only MPP 260 CI, MPP 360 CI and MPP 440 CI): Causes automatic switching of refrigerators with "AES" (Automatic Energy Selector, Electrolux / Dometic) from gas to 12 V operation in the event of a permanently abundant solar power surplus.
Connection for battery temperature sensor (item no. 2001): With lead batteries, the charging voltage is automatically adjusted to the battery temperature, resulting in a better full charge of the weaker battery in cold weather and avoiding unnecessary battery gassing and stress in summer temperatures. LiFePO4 batteries: Battery protection at high and especially at low temperatures.Highly recommended if the battery temperature may fall below 0°C during operation.
Ready to plug in for connecting the Votronic solar display units LCD Solar Computer S for optimum control of the system.
Charging programs
- "Gel": Charging program for gel batteries, characteristic curve IU1oU2 Adapted to sealed, gas-tight gel/dryfit batteries with fixed electrolyte, which generally require a higher charging voltage level and longer U1 holding times in order to achieve short charging times with particularly high capacity storage and to avoid long-term battery "starvation".
- "AGM": Charging program for AGM/fleece batteries, characteristic curve IU1oU2 Intended for charging sealed, gas-tight AGM (Absorbent Glass Mat) batteries in lead-fleece technology, which require a particularly high U1 level with coordinated holding times for full charging and then a moderate U2 level for charge retention (plate and round cell technology).
- "UNIVERSAL": Charging program for lead-acid/wet/AGM batteries, characteristic curve IU1oU2 Universal program for charging and maintaining the charge of acid batteries in vehicles (mixed mobile/stationary). With a medium U1 level, still offers short charging times, a good charge factor and good acid mixing for open and closed, low-maintenance, maintenance-free standard, traction, lighting, solar and heavy-duty batteries, as well as AGM batteries with a normal U1 level.
- "LiFePO4": Charging program for lithium batteries, characteristic curve IU1oU2 Charging program tailored to lithium LiFePO4 batteries with their own BMS and prescribed or built-in protective circuitry.
Note that the solar charge controller may only be used with solar panels up to the maximum power rating (Wp) and below the maximum permissible voltage (Voc). Furthermore, the controller is not suitable for an input-side connection (+/- solar panels) of wind, water, fuel or motor generators, power supply units, batteries or other power sources.
