Motorhome Solar Panel: What you should consider when buying

At the motorhome we have to try to gain as much energy as possible from the smallest area. We do not have the large roof area of a house available here, but the demands on the electrical system (and thus the electricity consumption) in travel vehicles increase. For this reason, solar panels for house roofs (and unfortunately too often also for camper) are not exactly optimal for use at the motorhome.

In order to keep the price low and competitive, technical compromises are made - e.g. (but not only) when selecting the installed solar cells. Calculated on the large area of a house roof, there is also a good amount of usable energy and no special attention is paid to the matter.

It's different with the motorhome. If we want to achieve a certain self -sufficiency with solar power, every solar panel must be uncompromisingly optimized. Efficiency of the cells, temperature coefficient, usable lighting speech ... If you pay attention to all of these factors, this makes a clear difference and sometimes decides whether we can easily load the laptop on the way again or not - not to mention the use of an induction hob completely .

In addition to pure technology, other properties also play a major role in suitability as a motorhome solar panel. This includes, for example, size and shape.

Solar panels are sensitive, the cells can break, which leads to the failure of the performance. For attachment to a vehicle roof with a constant vibration and potholes in the road, one working in the heat and cold and possibly even slight overburdening when building on expedition mobins, an edge length of 2m may become a problem.

In order to be less vibration, a solar panel for the motorhome should rather have shorter edge lengths. Different formats also help with better use of existing roof areas. With Vans, in particular, the standard size panels often do not fit really well in order to be able to use a lot of space. The space next to roof windows or ventilation mushrooms is generally considered lost.

The "Black Tiger" motorhome solar panel was designed to take all these points into account. It combines uncompromisingly optimized technology and is available in 5 special formats for less vibration sophistication and the best umbrella use.

Motorhome solar panel "Black Tiger" - that's why you get more electricity in it
Extremely high efficiency

With an efficiency of up to 24.4%, all of our "Black Tiger is currently doing technically possible top performance. We only use TOP of the Range Sunpower Maxeon Gen. III cells.

What does "Top of the Range" mean cells?

It is best to imagine solar cells how a natural product never comes 100% from production. The cells are therefore shot at with light immediately after their production under very specific conditions, rated their performance and divided into quality levels. Only the cells that were able to achieve the highest classification (quality class ultra peak performance) make it into the complete Tigerexped solar range.

In order to achieve the best possible performance in every situation, the "Black Tiger" solar panel has other properties that make it a real high -performance module.

Motorhome solar panel with full area (!) Copper layer on the back

In order to achieve a high level of failure, we use a full -surface copper contact layer on the back instead of copper compounds (often also suboptimally installed on the front). That brings two great advantages:

1. Less hidden area on the front and thus higher energy yield in relation to the module size.

2. A significantly higher reliability of the panel

If individual cells of a module are damaged (microrises, possibly also due to branch or hailstorm), this often leads to the total failure of the complete solar panel - the individual, important connections are interrupted, no more damaged cells can no longer produce electricity . The full -surface copper contact layer of the Black Tiger Solar Panele, on the other hand, guarantees the best possible supply of your electrical consumers, even in the case of dead single cells or cell areas.

Improved temperature coefficient - up to 25% more power even in heat

Manufacturer information for the performance of a solar panel relates to an ambient temperature of 25 ° C. The problem: If the temperature increases, the performance falls, because solar panels can work much less effectively in heat. Now imagine how quickly 25 ° C reach or exceeded on the roof of a motorhome ... The power falls per degree of temperature.

The "Black Tiger" motorhome solar panel, as well as the super-flat "Black Tiger SF, hold here with a special optimization. In order to keep the losses through heat small, they are with a high idle voltage and low temperature coefficients (loss of performance per grade Celsius) Equipped. For you, this means: up to 25% more energy yield than with a conventional solar panel in warm temperatures.

We have also summarized more information in this article.

Larger, usable light spectrum

Of a solar panel, only a fraction of the incoming light rays (within a certain frequency range) can be used to generate energy. The "Black Tiger" solar panel is able to use a larger frequency range than usual, i.e. a larger light spectrum. This also includes the valuable last rays of sunshine of the twilight, which can still be used to obtain electricity for the electrical devices in the camper.

Control with three separation diodes

The special connection of a black tiger solapanel comprises three separation diodes. This guarantees maximum power for partial shading. Cells in the sun are less impaired by those in the shade.

Solar panels with special dimensions

In order to take into account vibration susceptibility to vibration, overwinding and heat cold extensions on a residentialis roof, we deliberately keep Black Tiger Solar Panele more smaller from the dimensions than is often common. The advantages are a higher failure and possible use of surfaces next to roof windows or the like. With a width of just 42 cm, the "Black Tiger 120" also fits easily next to hatches, ventilation mushrooms or roof boxes. Or choose our almost square special format in the "Black Tiger 180", which fits most van roofs particularly well.

Frame and cover

The "Black Tiger" solar panels are covered by a special glass and placed in an aluminum frame in fine black.

Connect the motorhome solar panel

The connection is made on the back via pre-assembled, two 0.9 m long cables with plugs according to MC4 standard.

For waterproof roof implementation, we recommend either the multi cable through or single (6-10mm) and double, horizontal cable drives (5-6 mm) from Scanstrut.

Solar controller

In order to be able to connect the solar panel to the battery, a solar controller is always required. For the connection between the solar panel and the solar controller, you still need solar flash in the corresponding length, an MC4 plug and an MC4 socket (see our solar installation material category)

We recommend the SmartSolar solar controller from Victron Energy (please select size). If you want to combine several panels, a larger controller is required. You can find out which controller you need as follows:

The values of an MPPT 75/15 mean, for example, a maximum of 75V idle voltage of the panel (VOC) and a maximum of 15a nominal stream. The VOC value is in the data sheet for each panel, the nominal charging current must be calculated.

Computing:

The Black Tiger 100 has a VOC of 37.20V. This is less than 75V and the solar controller with 75V idle voltage is sufficient.
In order to calculate the nominal charging current, the nominal power is divided by 12.8V: i.e. 100WP divided by 12.8V results in 7.81a. This is smaller than 10 and therefore the MPPT 75/10 solar controller can be used for our Black Tiger 100.
